Since I'm more of an apple guy than a pear guy, I can't say I'd become a habitual eater of the apple-pear, but for a nice change up, it's definitely a refreshing treat.
My fruit guy on the corner amazed me once again by selling me an "apple-pear" (aka pyrus pyrifolia), a pear that looks half-apple and half-pear. If you remember correctly, another piece of interesting fruit he offered me was the pluot, and I was instantly in love. This time around, I'm giving the apple-pear one and a half thumbs up. It was fairly heavy for an apple-shaped fruit, but had the shape of an apple and the skin of a pear. The inside was more pear than apple, as it wasn't too crunchy but more sugary like a pear. I felt weird about biting into it, so I cut it up. When I bit into an apple, I love to hear that loud crunch, but this fruit wasn't like that.

Is this really found in nature? Seems kind of mad-scientist.

I believe it's a mad-scientist type fruit, though most fruit is cross-bred and cultivated in some way to become juicier and bigger and better.
